Tank 1 Exterior / Tank 2 Interior & Exterior

Upon starting work at Bass Lake Tank #2, extensive corrosion was found that was beyond the original scope of work. At the District’s May 22, 2023 Board Meeting, a change order for the project was approved for the more extensive work. The additional work consists of replacement of the center support, all rafters, rafter clips, and knuckle spacers, as well as rehabilitation of roof plate and the girders. Due to the more extensive structural work, the project completion date has been revised and is anticipated to be complete December 2024.

Project Background & Summary

The District owns and operates 37 drinking water tanks/reservoirs, 20 of them are welded steel tanks. Industry Standards recommend welded steel tanks be recoated at regular intervals to achieve their expected design service life; this is typically at 15-year intervals. Recoating tanks avoids premature degradation and replacement. Once the protective coatings on the interior and exterior surfaces have failed, the tanks are susceptible to corrosion, which is a not reversible.

During the Districts regular inspection of its steel tank coatings, the Bass Lake Tanks were found to be in very poor condition resulting in the upgraded priority of the work in the District’s tank recoating plan.

The Bass Lake Tanks constructed in 2005 store 4.1 million gallons each with a combined storage capacity of 8.2 million gallons. The tanks serve as a transmission hub that provides water storage for the communities of El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park and are a vital part of the District’s water distribution system.

In 2018/2019, the District performed recoating of the interior of Tank #1. Included in this Project is the recoating of the exterior of Tank #1 and the interior and exterior recoating of Tank #2. Additionally, safety upgrades are also included with the addition of stairs and handrails.

Work is expected to begin in late February 2023 and proceed through October 2023. The contractor, Cal Sierra Construction, is permitted to work between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm.
